The L600 Leopard Cactus Pleco is one of the most striking members of the Pseudacanthicus group. Its heavily armored body, powerful build, prominent odontodes, and bold leopard-like spotting make it a spectacular large pleco for experienced keepers. Mature specimens can develop intense orange to reddish coloration in the fins, creating an especially dramatic contrast against the dark, spotted body.

L600 is associated with the Rio Branco and neighboring drainages of the Brazil–Guyana region, including the Rio Takutu and Rio Rupununi. These river environments provide rocky structure, caves, submerged wood, and strong oxygenation. A well-designed aquarium should replicate these characteristics with sturdy rockwork, large pieces of driftwood, and secure caves that can withstand the activity of a large, powerful pleco.

Although young specimens can appear relatively peaceful, adult L600s can become strongly territorial, particularly toward other plecos and bottom-dwelling fish. They are best kept individually unless housed in a very large aquarium with abundant territory and hiding places. Their impressive size, strength, and defensive odontodes make them a species best suited to experienced aquarists.

L600 requires a large aquarium with a substantial footprint and plenty of sturdy hiding places. Large caves, rock formations, slate, and driftwood can be arranged to create separate territories and shaded retreats. Caves should have entrances large enough for the adult fish while still providing a secure, enclosed resting area.

Strong filtration is essential for this species. L600 produces considerable waste as it grows and benefits from oversized mechanical and biological filtration, strong oxygenation, and consistent water changes. Young fish in particular should not be exposed to measurable ammonia or nitrite, making excellent filtration and stable water quality especially important.

The Leopard Cactus Pleco is an omnivore with a strong preference for protein-rich foods. Its diet should include quality sinking foods along with shrimp, mussel, insect-based foods, and other meaty offerings. EBO Mussel Sticks are an excellent staple, while EBO Plankton Tabs and EBO Seafood Softgran provide additional nutritional variety. Feeding after the aquarium lights dim can encourage natural feeding behavior.

Driftwood and other hard surfaces should remain available even though L600 is not a dedicated wood-eating pleco. Providing a variety of food sources is preferable to relying on algae alone. As the fish matures, adjust feeding quantities to maintain good body condition without allowing excess food to compromise water quality.

L600 can be housed with large, peaceful or moderately assertive South American fish that occupy different areas of the aquarium. Large tetras, robust characins, appropriately sized cichlids, and other substantial community fish can work well. Avoid housing it with similarly territorial plecos unless the aquarium is exceptionally large and contains extensive rockwork and multiple caves. Its territorial nature makes a single-specimen setup the safest choice for most aquariums.
