The L240 Vampire Pleco is one of the more impressive members of the Leporacanthicus group, combining a heavily armored body, large sail-like dorsal fin, striking spotting, and the distinctive elongated teeth that give the group its “Vampire Pleco” name. L240 is closely associated with the Leporacanthicus galaxias complex and can reach a substantial adult size, making it a particularly attractive choice for keepers of large South American aquariums.

In nature, L240 comes from the upper Rio Orinoco region of Venezuela, where it inhabits warm, highly oxygenated waters associated with rocky river environments. Strong current, rockwork, submerged wood, and crevices provide both grazing surfaces and secure retreats. Like other Leporacanthicus, it appreciates excellent water quality and plenty of oxygenation.

Despite its intimidating appearance, the Vampire Pleco is generally peaceful toward appropriately sized tankmates. It can become territorial toward other bottom-dwelling catfish, particularly when mature, so providing multiple caves and clearly separated territories is beneficial. Its large size and predatory dentition also mean that very small fish and delicate tankmates should be avoided.

L240 should be kept in a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration and strong oxygenation. Moderate to strong water movement is ideal, especially when combined with areas of calmer water where the fish can rest. Smooth rocks, driftwood, caves, and other sturdy structures should be provided to create secure hiding places and establish territories. Because this species can exceed 10 inches, a large footprint is more important than simply providing a tall aquarium.

Although L240 is classified primarily as a carnivorous species, it is best offered a varied diet rather than relying exclusively on meaty foods. Quality sinking foods, frozen foods, shrimp, mussel, insect-based foods, and other protein-rich offerings can form the foundation of its diet. It will also readily accept prepared foods such as EBO Mussel Sticks, while spirulina-based foods can provide useful variety.

Large individuals are capable of consuming surprisingly substantial meals, so feeding should be adjusted to the size and activity level of the fish. Removing uneaten food is especially important because maintaining excellent water quality is essential for long-term success with large Leporacanthicus.

L240 is well suited to a large South American community aquarium containing appropriately sized, peaceful fish. Avoid very small tankmates that could potentially be viewed as prey, as well as overly aggressive species that may compete for caves and bottom territory. When kept with other plecos or large bottom dwellers, provide plenty of caves and visual barriers to reduce territorial competition.
