Its dark body is covered with large, irregular pale spots that can range from bright white to warmer cream or orange-pink tones depending on locality and individual coloration. In nature, these plecos are associated with rocky bedrock habitats, crevices, and areas with strong current and excellent oxygenation. Their smaller mouths, which are lightly toothed, are evidence of poor algae grazing. They feed on small meaty foods such as insects and crustaceans.

H. contradens are generally peaceful toward other community fish but can become territorial toward other plecos, particularly around preferred caves. Mature males develop more pronounced odontodes around the cheeks and pectoral spines, while females tend to develop a broader body when mature. When keeping multiple specimens, providing several appropriately sized caves and plenty of visual barriers helps reduce competition between males.

Care Requirements

Temperature: 77–84°F
pH: 5.5–7.5
Tank Size: 40 gallons+
Water: Soft to moderately hard, clean and highly oxygenated
Group Size: 1+

H. contradens do best in mature aquariums with excellent biological filtration and strong oxygenation. A river-style setup with smooth rocks, driftwood, caves, and moderate to strong water movement works particularly well. Flat stones and narrow crevices provide natural grazing surfaces and give these plecos places to retreat during the day.

Their natural diet is carnivorous and includes insects, larvae, and small aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium, they should be offered a varied diet rather than being treated as strictly algae-eating plecos. Meatier foods, quality sinking wafers and pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetables provide a good nutritional balance.

Wild-caught specimens benefit from consistent feeding and excellent water quality while acclimating to aquarium life. Offering food shortly after the aquarium lights go out can encourage feeding, as plecos are most active during the evening and nighttime. Small, regular feedings are preferable to relying on naturally occurring algae alone.

H. contradens can make excellent community fish when housed with peaceful species that do not constantly compete for bottom territory. Tetras, rasboras, hatchetfish, peaceful cichlids, and other non-aggressive community fish can work well. Multiple plecos should be provided with enough caves and territory to prevent persistent competition.

Difficulty: Moderate
Breeding: Cave Spawner

Hypancistrus contradens are paternal cave spawners, with the male guarding and fanning the eggs inside a tight cave or rocky crevice.
