The Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus) is one of the most striking nano fish in the aquarium hobby. Also known as the Galaxy Rasbora, this tiny species features a deep blue body covered in brilliant pearl-like spots, accented by vibrant red and orange fins. Males develop especially intense coloration and will display to one another throughout the day.

Despite their incredible appearance, Celestial Pearl Danios are peaceful and relatively shy fish. They are best kept in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of cover, moss, and fine-leaved plants. A darker substrate and subdued lighting can help these tiny fish feel secure and bring out their best coloration.

CPDs are not especially strong swimmers compared with larger danios and spend much of their time hovering around plants and cover. Gentle water movement is ideal, and they should not be housed with large or overly boisterous tankmates that may intimidate them or outcompete them for food.

Celestial Pearl Danios have very small mouths and do best with appropriately sized foods. Quality micro pellets and finely crushed flakes make good staples, while regular offerings of baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, or other small frozen and live foods will provide valuable variety and help maintain their vibrant coloration.

Their peaceful nature makes them excellent inhabitants of planted nano and community aquariums, provided their tankmates are similarly small and peaceful. Shrimp and other diminutive community species can make good companions, while larger or aggressive fish should be avoided.

Celestial Pearl Danios are also prolific egg scatterers and will readily spawn in mature, heavily planted aquariums. Dense moss and fine-leaved plants provide excellent spawning habitat and can give fry places to hide from adults.
